The power of imagination

February 24th, 2021

This was the first article I wrote when I transferred from The Torch newspaper's news section to the lifestyles section. At this time, I heard that Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), a roleplaying adventure game, was popular among students. Additionally, I knew that one of my professors enjoyed D&D, so I wanted to hear her thoughts. I interviewed her and a couple of students and talked about how they were first attracted to this style of game, why they continue playing it, and the adventures they went on. I also researched the origin story of D&D, its creator, and the legacy he left behind for his fans.

ESAs are the way

November 10th, 2020

In our first full semester amid a global pandemic, I wanted to write about a way in which students may be coping with the added stress of online learning, staying inside their place of residence, and not knowing what the future may hold. I interviewed three individuals who own Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) and how these cuddly creatures have helped them survive. Additionally, I conducted thorough research on Ferris State's policy and procedure for students to have ESAs live with them in the residence halls.

My hope for this article was to let students know this is an option for them too if they believe an ESA may be beneficial for their mental wellbeing.

Adding more entertainment to Big
Rapids

November 3rd, 2020

Ferris' marketing classes were working on a hypothetical project to see what kinds of entertainment businesses students would love to see added to Big Rapids, as a way to better their college experiences. I attended a focus group discussion to observe what businesses students preferred to go to, how much they'd be willing to spend at the businesses, and how often they would visit them with friends. I interviewed the professor leading this project as well as some students working on it.

The purpose of this article was to prove that a large majority of students are interested in new, fun places in the Big Rapids area.

"What was I wearing?"

December 15th, 2020

On campus, there is a Student Registered Organization known as the Anti-Violence Alliance (AVA). The students, staff, and faculty involved in the AVA strive to create awareness of the violence that can occur in relationships whether it be physical, emotional, or mental. The AVA was preparing for an event known as "What was I wearing?" where victims of sexual assault anonymously donate the clothes they wore when the assault happened to them and their personal stories. I knew this group was looking for anonymous volunteers.

So, not only did I want to help the AVA advertise this event, but I also wanted to publicly debunk the heinous idea that what a person wears contributes to their assault.
